LIFE STRAW

WHEN and WHO
  • Designed by Vestergaard Frandsen
  • Year of creation-2005
  • Lifestraw is an amazing waterfiltering product capable of cleaning up to 1000l of water
WHY?

Pronounced as “Best invention of 2005” by Times magazine, the Lifestraw is 31cm long platic tube that removes 99,9% of bacteria and parasites contained in water. The product was designed for humanitarian purposes and is distributed when earthquakes, floods or any natural disaster take place but is also available to purchase online.

THE PRODUCT

I have chosen this product because of its simple and cause serving design.

ABOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS

Lifestraw consists of four filters:textile pre-filter,polyester filter, iodine filter and active carbon filter. They take out the bacteria, remove the smell of the water, kill the bacteria and filter out bigger parts. The cleaning of the substance is non-toxic and non-chemical.

DESIGN PROCESS

WHY IT INSPIRES?

Lifestraw inspires me because it serves a great purpose for the developing countries to which the access to fresh and clean is  water is highly limited. As a part of the lifestraw products family which includes Lifestraw Family 1.0 and Lifestraw Go the product that I have chosen to place my attention upon is lightweight, carryable and has a shelf life up to three years. It is highly useful during humantian crises.

CRITICAL ASPECT

The product is criticised for being too expensive for the target market and another problem that may occur is the actual possibility of accessing a water source but it is not directly approached as an issue by the invention design or concept.
