Who are you anyway? Design for cultural understanding.
Project objectives: Students are asked to design and prototype services/products/interiors that are able to encourage cultural understanding. In particular they are asked to make people understand better the culture of another by design.
The first stage of the project is the design of cultural probes. Cultural probes (or design probes) is a technique used to inspire ideas in a design process. It serves as a means of gathering inspirational data about people’s lives, values and thoughts. The probes are small packages that can include any sort of artifact (like a map, postcard, camera or diary) along with evocative tasks, which are given to participants to allow them to record specific events, feelings or interactions. The aim is to elicit inspirational responses from people, in order to understand their culture, thoughts and values better, and thus stimulate designer’s imaginations. The outcome from the design probes will serve as a base for developing ideas of cultural understanding and integration.
At the second stage the students will prepare a contra-brief and will explain their idea. This will be made by a specific brain storming session conducted in class. The students will then develop their project, followed in class to a prototyping phase.
